The formal style of Hung Leng Kuen was founded by Sifu J.R. Dutton (or SiJo = 'founder') in Southampton in the 1970's.
Up to that point, Sifu Dutton had been teaching Fu Jow Pai (Tiger Claw System) and Hut Pao Tsut (Black Leopard System) as taught to him by Sifu John Rostron. John Rostron taught Fu Jow Pai which had been taught to him by Barry Stone, who in turn was taught by a Master Wan. Historical details get sketchy here, because John Rostron seldom spoke of his teacher, believing that the individual should think for himself and stand on his or her own merits.
However, he was the founder of Hut Pao Tsut, which he appointed Sifu Dutton the head of on his formal retirement during his final visit to Southampton in the 1990s. John Rostron passed away not long into the new millenium.
